Celtic Cross — Classic 10-Card Spread
Celtic Cross — The King of Tarot Spreads
The Celtic Cross is arguably the most recognizable and detailed spread in worldwide Tarot practice. It consists of 10 cards and provides a comprehensive analysis of any situation, covering the past, present, hidden influences, hopes, and the final outcome.
History of the Spread
The spread became widely known through Arthur Edward Waite, who described it in his work "The Pictorial Key to the Tarot" (1910). Since then, the Celtic Cross has become the gold standard for serious Tarot readings.
The 10 Positions of the Celtic Cross
- Heart of the matter — the central card reflecting the core of the question.
- Crossing card — laid across the first; represents an obstacle or complementary factor.
- Conscious goals — what you are striving toward.
- Subconscious foundation — deep feelings and hidden motives.
- The past — events and energies that are leaving the situation.
- Near future — what will happen in the very near term.
- You in the situation — your attitude and role.
- Environment — external influences and opinions of others.
- Hopes and fears — inner expectations.
- Outcome — the final result given the current trajectory.
Layout Order
The first six cards form the cross: card 1 is placed in the center, card 2 across it, card 3 above, card 4 below, card 5 to the left, card 6 to the right. Cards 7 through 10 are laid in a column to the right of the cross, from bottom to top.
Working Recommendations
- Use this spread for serious, multifaceted questions.
- Take your time: give each position sufficient attention.
- Look for connections between cards — they tell a unified story.
- Pay special attention to the outcome card in the context of hopes and fears.
